The city of Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. Montgomery escaped major physical damage from the Civil War but it suffered from the destruction of Alabama’s infrastructure after the war. Following the Civil War, Montgomery boasts first electric streetcar in the country and the first flight school. Orville and Wilbur conducted their first night flights in Montgomery in 1910 on the site that is now Maxwell Air Force Base.

 Alabama State University is located in Montgomery.
