Juneau is the capital of Alaska and is located on the Gastineau Channel. Richard Harris and Joe Juneau found gold on the site in October 1880 and  staked out a 160  acre town site. In 1970 Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the surrounding area to form the current city.
